How do you do a drilling rig?

There are a whole bunch of ways to do drilling rigs, (large or small grid) and some wouldn't even need hinges or rotors. The simplest (for mining rock, ice, or possibly boulders) is to have a rover with a piston or two facing downward with one or more drills on the end. You group the pistons and add the group to your hotbar with reverse.

Can you drill a hole with a Flying Drill?

But if you drag the drills along can do nice trenches with it. The flying ones nose catches on the pit it digs so not great for going strait down, but can dig a good sized hole to get to ore. How do Rover drills work?

Simple. A design I built (in large grid) recently has a large rover with two drill arms that swing out and down on hinges and then you use pistons to lower the drills. (With the drills on of course.) The 4 hinges are all added together in one group, so they only have 2 hotbar actions: Reverse and Hinge Lock.
